Lady Vols Consistent at Cougar Classic
September 15, 2014 | Women's Golf
HANAHAN, S.C. - With improved weather conditions, the Lady Vols remained consistent as they finished the second round of the Cougar Classic in a tie for ninth place. Freshman Anna Newell again spearheaded the group shooting one-under par.
"Anna played very well today and got her first under par round," head coach Judi Pavon said. "She was steady from start to finish. Lucia also played solid golf."
Lucia Polo shot a 72 (E), improving one stroke from the first round.
Despite some errors, the remaining three also performed well, including freshman Blakesly Warren who improved two shots from yesterday. Both Warren and senior AJ Newell shot a 75 (+3) to round out the counting scores. Hannah Pietila added a score of 76 to the mix.
As a team, the group shot a combined 293, a stroke better than the first round effort. Their total score of 587 brings them in a two-way tie for ninth place with North Carolina.
"We are looking to have a better day tomorrow," Pavon said. "Our goal is to take advantage of the par fives and break par as a team. We have played pretty well but just haven't had anyone really shoot low, which is what the teams ahead of us have done."
Arkansas took the lead after shooting a 284 to move Wake Forest into a second place tie. UCLA had the second-best round in tournament history shooting a 279 to make the biggest move from seventh to second place.
The third and final round of the tournament will take place tomorrow. Due to the current downpour of rain, the final round has been moved up to an 8:30 a.m. ET shotgun start.
