Lady Vols Finish Cougar Classic Strong

HANAHAN, S.C. -- The Tennessee women's golf team finished in seventh place after a valiant effort in the final round of the Cougar Classic. The Lady Vols jumped up two spots after carding seven-under par 281 in Tuesday's final round.
The team began the first two rounds with scores of 294 and 293. Shooting seven-under on the final day brought their combined total to 868 (+4), allowing them to defeat five nationally ranked teams.
"Today was a really good day and this was a good way to start the season tournament wise," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We beat a lot of good teams and definitely started off on the right foot."
Sisters AJ and Anna Newell led the Lady Vols in the final round with scores of 67 and 68, respectively. Anna Newell led the group overall with a combined total of 212 (-4) for an 11th place tie. AJ Newell finished behind win a tie for 20th place with a tournament total of 216 (E). AJ Newell's score of 67 marks a new career low.
"The Newell sisters were amazing today," Pavon said. "It was great to see AJ break 70 in back-to-back tournaments. Anna breaking par for the tournament was awesome."
Sophomore Lucia Polo finished in a 22nd place tie with her second consecutive score of 72 to bring her final score to a 217 (+1). Both Hannah Pietila and Blakesly Warren carded final scores of 226 (+10). Pietila shot a 76 and Warren shot her tournament best 74.
"Lucia also had a really good tournament," Pavon said. "I saw a lot of great things from Hannah and Blakesly this week also. We have a lot to build on for this season, and that's exciting."
Arkansas won the Cougar Classic title in record-breaking fashion as they set a new tournament low round of 279 in the finale. UCLA was runner-up at 11-under par. Both Arkansas and UCLA were making their first-ever appearance at the event. Sandy Choi of Duke claimed individual medalist honors shooting 11-under par 205.
The Lady Vols will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 22 as they make their way to Vail, Colo. for the Golfweek Challenge.
