Lady Vols Conclude Day One
September 14, 2014 | Women's Golf
HANAHAN, S.C. - In the opening day of the Cougar Classic, inclement weather condition suspended play both in the morning hours and at the end of the day. Despite the conditions, freshman Anna Newell and sophomore Lucia Polo led the team shooting just one-over par.
"The players did a good job today," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We missed some putts and left a few shots out on the course. All in all, it was a good day and a nice start to the season.
Both Anna Newell and Polo shot a 73 (+1). Behind them, senior AJ Newell and sophomore Hannah Pietila shot a 74, two-over par. Blakesly Warren rounded out the group with a 77 (+5).
The four counting scores finished the Lady Vols in a three-way tie for ninth place with Charleston Southern and Duke with a score of 294 (+6).
"The scores are very bunched up, so we need to chose clubs a little better tomorrow to leave ourselves some easier two putts," Pavon said. "This is a course that you can shoot a low score on, and we need someone to break par."
Leading the field was Wake Forest who shot an impressive six-under 282, followed by Arkansas and NC State who shot five-under and one-under, respectively.
Sierra Sims of Wake Forest tied the tournament low-round record of 65 in the first round to lead the field.
The second round of the tournament will resume tomorrow morning at with groups of four, rather than three with a shotgun start at 9 .a.m ET.
