Whoriskey Reaches 2nd Round of US Open Qualies

NEW YORK - Caitlin Whoriskey continued her run in the US Open after an upset win over No. 5 seed Danka Kovinic in the first round of qualifying.
Whoriskey started off slow but came back strong after losing the first set 6-2 and beginning the second set behind 4-2. She scored four unanswered games to win the set 6-4 before finishing the match with a strong 6-4 third set. The scoring was 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Whoriskey will face Australia's Ashleigh Barty in the second round of qualifying on either Thursday or Friday.
The former Lady Vol All-American earned her first trip to a Grand Slam by winning the US Open National Playoffs event in New Haven, Conn., on Monday.
