Lucia Polo continued her dominance of the Caribbean on Monday. The freshman from Guatemala shot a career low round of 70 (-2) at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
"I played solid all day and I'm really happy with how I behaved on the golf course," Polo said. "I'm looking forward to trying it again tomorrow."
Polo was in the Central America/Caribbean region twice over the winter break. During her visits, she captured two tournament championships while playing for her country of Guatemala. After two rounds in Puerto Rico, Polo is tied for ninth place at even par.
Despite Polo's career day, the Tennessee women's golf team slipped to tenth place in the standings. The Lady Vols connected on 13 birdies en route to replicating their first round score of 300 (+12). UT currently sits with a two-day total of 600 (+24).
After leading the Lady Vols on Sunday, Chessey Thomas fell into a tie for 19th after a second round 74 (+2). Thomas has experienced the yin and yang of the Rio Mar River Course. Over two days, she has accumulated a front nine total of 6-over par while shooting 3-under par on the back nine.
Juniors Daeun Song and Mason Chen both carded a second round 76 (+4). Competing as an individual, Song recovered from a rough start to birdie three out of her last five holes. Meanwhile, Mason Chen took a roller coaster ride through the Puerto Rico Classic course as she recorded six birdies, eight bogeys and one double bogey.
Sisters Hannah Pietila and Emmie Pietila rounded out the Tennessee lineup. Hannah Pietila played solid for most of her second round except for three costly double bogeys. She finished with a score of 80 (+8) while Emmie Pietila carded an 88 (+16).
The story of the tournament thus far is the dominance of the University of Arkansas. The Razorbacks have a 13 strokes lead heading into final round. In addition, Arkansas has three ladies tied for second place individually.
Tennessee will wrap up its stay in Puerto Rico when the final round tees off on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. (ET).
