Josh Smith Out For Remainder Of Season
November 10, 2014 | Football
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Head coach Butch Jones announced at his Monday press conference that sophomore wide receiver Josh Smith will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2014 season with an ankle injury. The Knoxville native will be able to apply for a redshirt season as he only played in three games prior to suffering the injury at Oklahoma on Sept. 13.
"Josh Smith had an exploratory procedure where they go in and determine if you need surgery or not," said Jones. "They did decide that he did need surgery so he did have surgery, he had his ankle scoped, they tightened the joint up.
"He will out for the rest of the season. We will have him back for spring football. We were hoping to have him back but just the ankle wasn't healing appropriately. So it is disappointing but exciting that we gain the year back in terms of a redshirt year so we will have him back."
Smith is in second year in program and had 10 catches for 135 yards with a touchdown in his three games in 2014. He had a career-high five catches for career-best 58 yards including 40-yard touchdown at #4/3 Oklahoma (9/13). he also had two catches including reception for 21 yards as he hurdled defender vs. Arkansas State (9/6). Smith opened 2014 with three catches for 48 yards vs. Utah State (8/31)
