RACE CENTRAL: CHATTANOOGA HEAD RACE

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee rowing team will take to the Tennessee River for their season opener on Saturday. This section of their home river however, is in Chattanooga for the 22nd annual Chattanooga Head Race. This will be Tennessee's 18th year racing in the Chattanooga Head Race and they have earned a total of 75 medals at the events.
At just over three-miles, this race offers the Lady Vols their first opportunity to compete against other notable universities.
The Women's Championship 1X will be Tennessee's first race of the fall racing season where the Lady Volunteers will compete against the Atlanta Rowing club. The Big Orange will race six shells and the event is set to begin at 9:50 AM.
At 11 AM, UT will take to the water in pairs racing in the Women's College 2-. Tennessee is set to race eight shells in the 15 boat race, racing against Georgia Tech, the University of Alabama, Vanderbilt and Calhoun Community College. Last season the Lady Vols swept the top four slot, bringing home a gold, silver and bronze medal.
Later in the day at 3:40 PM the team will race in the Women's College 4+ division. The competition in this race includes many notable universities; including; Alabama, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Georgia and Tulane.
In fall rowing regattas, all crews row five kilometers upstream, make the turn, then enter through the chute to start the race. All boats start at different times and race the clock throughout the course of the winding 5-kilometer race.
