VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Behind a career-best first round from sophomore Jack Smith, the Volunteers find themselves in fifth place after two rounds at the 2014 Quail Valley Intercollegiate.
Sophomore Jack Smith held the individual lead after round one. The Knoxville native posted a career-best 9-under par 63 at Quail Valley Golf Club. Smith's 9-under par 63 tied the course record. This is an even more impressive feat due to the fact Quail Valley Golf Club has hosted numerous USGA and PGA events including Q-school, US Open Qualifying and State Amateurs.
Smith was the main reason the Vols were the only team to play the par 3s under par (-1) for the first round. Two of his nine birdies came on the par 3 12th and 16th holes.
"Everything fell into place," Smith said. "I hit a bunch of pretty good iron shots that left me a lot of really makeable birdie putts. I managed to make the majority of them."
Smith lost the individual lead after round two; however, he is only one stroke off the lead. He posted a second round 75 (+3) to finish 6-under par for the day.
The Volunteers saw an opening round 73 (+1) from junior Chad Merzbacher. Merzbacher, who has been the team's leader this season, bounced back and posted a second round 67 (-5). He finished the day 4-under par and in a tie for 8th place.
Freshman Lorenzo Scalise, shot 3-over par (73-74--147) on the day. Scalise's rounds were up and down. They included an eagle, four birdies, five bogeys and two double bogeys. He is currently in a tie for 42nd place.
After shooting a solid opening round 70 (-2), sophomore Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara proceeded to fall on hard times and card a second round 77 (+5) to place him in a tie for 42nd place, with teammate Scalise, at 3-over par.
Wrapping up the scoring for the Volunteers was junior Michael Nagy. Nagy posted a first round 75 (+3), followed by a second round 73 (+1). He is currently in a tie for 50th place at 4-over par.
There is a three way tie for the individual lead after round two. Kentucky's Tyler McDaniel, Jacksonville's Colin Monagle and North Florida's Joey Petronio all share the lead at 7-under par.
With tournament leader North Florida sitting 12-under par, Tennessee will have four strokes to make up at Quail Valley Golf Club on Tuesday.
"We're seventh in the field on par 5 scoring (-9)," added Smith. "We're looking at that as a chance to make up some ground. We're only four strokes behind, a shot from each of us and we're right there. Go out and play like we can and it will take care of itself."
On Tuesday, Tennessee will start their final round of the Quail Valley Intercollegiate at 8:00 a.m. ET from the first tee. Tennessee will be paired with Jacksonville and Michigan State.
