Seniors Shine in Singles and Doubles
October 19, 2014 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Lady Vols slumped in day three of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, but seniors Joanna Henderson and Caitlyn Williams managed to shine.
Henderson and Williams started the day off with a doubles win to advance to the semifinals of the tournament after defeating the duo of William/Moraes from Middle Tennessee State University 8-4.
The other doubles team fell quickly behind in their match with the No. 3 seed in the tournament, Courtney Colton and Sydney Campbell of Vanderbilt, eventually falling 8-1.
Henderson and Williams, the No. 2 seed of the tournament, will seek to avenge Lindl and Olivarez's loss as they face Colton and Campbell on Monday.
In singles, of the four players who competed, Henderson was the only one to advance to the third round. She defeated Eastern Kentucky's Emilia Granstrom 6-3, 6-3.
In the round of 16, Henderson faced Kentucky's Aldila Sutjiadi. After two long and hard fought sets, she came out with the win to advance to the quarterfinals Monday.
Junior Tiffany Tavares as well as sophomores Victoria Olivarez and Laurence Guevremont had their runs in the tournament ended as they fell to their opponents in singles.
All matches will be played at Goodfriend Tennis Center for the remainder of the tournament. Doubles will start at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, and singles will follow.
