Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate

Second Round Halted by Darkness
October 11, 2014 | Men's Golf
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- For the second consecutive day, the Tennessee men's golf team has battled weather conditions and early darkness in Jonesborough.
The Vols ended their second day at the 17th Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in a tie for 11th place. UT shot rounds of 303 and 281 for a total of 584 (+8).
Friday's first round was suspended due to heavy rains at the Blackthorn Club. The 15-team field picked up first round play Saturday morning at 8:45 a.m. (ET) and played until darkness fell on six teams Saturday evening.
The first two rounds were complete opposites for the Vols. After a tough first round 303 (+15), the team bounced back to post an impressive 281 (-7) Saturday.
Chad Merzbacher heads up the Tennessee starting five with a two day total of 142 (-2). Merzbacher is tied for 12th place after posting a first round 75 followed by a bogey-free second round 67. Through two rounds, Merzbacher has connected on eight birdies. He is eight strokes off the individual lead heading to Sunday.
Sophomore Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara, like Merzbacher, carded an opening round 75. The Mexico native bounced back with five birdies and one bogey in round two to post a 4-under par 68. Guevara is in a tie for 21st place at 1-under par.
Competing as an individual, junior Michael Nagy was the only Vol to not finish his second round. Nagy finished round one Saturday, carding a 1-over par round. He had found three consecutive birdies in round two, before a tough double bogey on the ninth. The Michigan native was only able to finish nine holes of his second round. Nagy will be looking to play 27 holes on Sunday.
Freshman Lorenzo Scalise posted rounds of 77 and 72 for a total of 5-over par. Knoxville native Jack Smith found four birdies on the back-nine during round two. He finished at 2-over par Saturday. Smith heads to Sunday sitting at 6-over par.
Rounding out the Volunteers' lineup, freshman Jordan Gumberg (+11) posted an opening round 76 followed by a second round 75. The Florida native improved his second round score by carding his first collegiate birdie on the 534-yard par-5 8th. Gumberg recorded two birdies on the round.
The No. 12 ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons have a five stroke lead over host ETSU heading into the final round. Meanwhile, Wake Forest's Will Zalatoris is holding off Virginia's Denny McCarthy for the top individual spot.
On Sunday, the 17th Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate will conclude with Tennessee teeing off at 8:50 a.m. (ET). At 9:00 a.m. (ET), the players concluding the second round will start the finish of their second round.
