Vol Golf Finishes T-11th at Carpet Capital

DALTON, Ga. -- The Tennessee men's golf team team closed out its first tournament of the season with an 11th place finish at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm in Dalton, Ga.
On Sunday, the Vols ended their three day tournament strong by posting a total score of 306-296-291--893 (+29).
Head coach Jim Kelson saw contributions from all five starters on the final day of play. Sophomore Oliver Goss had his best round of the tournament, finishing Sunday with a 70 (-2). Goss rattled off five consecutive birdies (seven total on the day), but spoiled a near perfect day with a triple bogey on the 17th hole. Goss finished the Carpet Capital in a tie for 33rd.
The Volunteers got a bounce back performance from junior Thomas Dunne as well. Like Goss, Dunne shot a final round 70 (-2) which brought his weekend total to 74-81-70--225 (+9). Dunne sank five birdies on Sunday and ended the Carpet Capital in a tie for 45th place.
Knoxville native Jack Smith completed his first collegiate tournament with a 27th place finish and his weekend total of 220 (+4) led the Vols at the Carpet Capital. Sophomore Chad Merzbacher finished 67th after carding rounds of 80-75-78--233 (+17). Merzbacher's best round featured three birdies. Senior Marshall Talkington finished 71st after carding rounds of 83-76-76--235 (+19). The Jackson, Tenn., native had a solid final round as he parred nine straight holes. Freshman Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara rounded out the rest of the Big Orange travel party. The Mexico native participated as an individual and finished 75th.
At the end of Sunday, Georgia Tech held the top spots on the Carpet Capital leaderboard. The Yellow Jackets on won the team championship by six strokes and had the winning individual Ollie Schniederjans who carded 68-69-70--207 (-9).
Tennessee will be back in action on September 20th in Nashville, Tenn., at the Ingram Invitational. The Volunteers will be honoring former head coach Mike Malarkey that weekend for his outstanding contributions to the Tennessee men's golf program.
