GREENSBORO, N.C.-- After the first round of action at the Bryan National Collegiate, the Lady Vol golf team is in 14th place. Tennessee ended the day with a 306 card (+18).
"The conditions today were really good, probably the nicest day we've played in this spring," head coach Judi Pavon said. "As a team we had didn't score very well. We putted well last weekend at LSU, but struggled on the greens today."
Senior Erica Popson leads the Lady Vols in a tie for 24th at 2-over par 74. Popson recorded four birdies through the first round. Sophomore Daeun Song follows in a tie for 33rd at 3-over 75. Sophomore AJ Newell sits in a tie for 64th with a 78 (+6) card and junior Chessey Thomas rounds out UT's counted scores at 7-over 79. Senior 4th Sara Monberg is in a tie for 84th at 11-over.
"Erica had a tough start, but finished with a couple birdies to turn in a decent round," Pavon said. "Daeun played pretty well today too."
Leading the field is No. 15 Virginia after firing a 7-under 281 card. No. 7 Vanderbilt (286) follows in second and No. 9 North Carolina (294) and No. 6 Arkansas (294) are tied for third. South Carolina (296) sits in fifth with No. 2 Duke (297) and Wake Forest (297) tied for sixth. Auburn (298) and Michigan State (298) are tied for eighth and No. 23 NC State (300) and No. 19 Georgia (300) round out the top 10, tied for 10th. Louisville and No. 5 Florida follow in a tie for 12th, while Florida State (307), UNC-Wilmington (311) and UNC-Greensboro (316) complete the standings.
Virginia's Elizabeth Brightwell is atop the individual standings at 4-under 68.
