KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Lady Vol golf squad teamed up with the Knoxville affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure in hosting a free women's and girls' golf clinic on Sunday at the Mack and Jonnie Day Golf Practice Facility.
The clinic ran from 3-5 p.m., and featured stations of chipping, putting and driving drills taught by members of the team. A total of 56 participants took part in the event, ranging from ages seven to 65.
"We're proud to be a part of it and we have a connection being women," assistant coach Jan Dowling said. "It's also a lot of fun to use golf as the avenue to spread a good message and raise money. To hopefully teach a young lady or young girl how to grip a club properly, you never know what's going to happen after that. It's a lot of fun to give back to the community."
"I love when we have all the younger girls out here and you can help them get better," senior Sara Monberg said. "I wish I had that when I was little, kind of have someone to look up to and see what I could do to become better and get tips. It's a great opportunity to help out."
In support of breast cancer awareness month, the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships, held at Holston Hills Country Club from Oct. 12-14, will also be tied to the Knoxville affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Each participating team at the tournament will receive pink ribbons to display on its bags, while the Lady Vols will sport pink polo's during the event. Additionally, fans will be able to donate money to the foundation during the tournament either in bins or by pledging an amount for every birdie Tennessee makes during the weekend for "Birdies for Breast Cancer."
