KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team was honored during the Vol football game at Neyland Stadium Saturday night for winning the 2012 SEC Tournament Championship.
UT captured its third-straight SEC Tournament Championship, and 16th overall, with a 70-58 victory over LSU on March 4, 2012. The trio of Glory Johnson, Shekinna Stricklen and Vicki Baugh all posted double-digit scoring performances.
The Lady Vols finished the 2011-12 season with a 27-9 record, making an NCAA-record 25th appearance in the Elite Eight before falling to No.1-ranked Baylor.
On April 18, 2012, legendary head coach Pat Summitt was named head coach emeritus after spending 38 seasons at the helm of the Lady Vol program. Summitt, the all-time wins leader among NCAA basketball coaches, had 1,098 victories at Tennessee. Associate head coach Holly Warlick was named Summitt's successor. Warlick spent 27 seasons as an assistant on the Tennessee staff and was a three-time All-American as a player for the Lady Vols.
The Big Orange returns six players in seniors Taber Spani and Kamiko Williams, junior Meighan Simmons, and sophomores Cierra Burdick, Isabelle Harrison and Ariel Massengale. UT welcomes five newcomers in freshmen Andraya Carter, Bashaara Graves, Jasmine Jones and Nia Moore, along with sophomore transfer Jasmine Phillips.
The 2012-13 campaign opens with an exhibition game at home against Carson-Newman College November 1.
