KOBE, Japan – Incoming Tennessee player Hannah Wilkinson and her New Zealand team saw their run in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup come to a close Sunday morning in a 4-0 loss to Mexico at Kobe University Stadium.
The Kiwis hung tough with Mexico in a scoreless first half. Mexico poured on goals from Sofia Huerta (47’), Natalia Gomez Junco (74’), Yamile Franco (85’) and Olivia Jimenez (87’) to advance to the second stage.
Wilkinson played the full 90 minutes in the loss. She totaled 271 minutes played and three starts over three games in the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. In New Zealand’s 2-2 tie against host nation Japan on Aug. 22, Wilkinson helped force an own goal by the Japanese to give the Kiwis a 1-0 lead.
Sunday’s match marked Wilkinson’s final FIFA U-20 match as she is currently 20 years old. Over the last three years, she has played in six FIFA U-20 matches for New Zealand. She has donned her nation’s colors 10 times over the last three years, including three matches in the 2012 London Olympics.
