Jim Weatherford
Defensive Back (1966-68)

Former Tennessee defensive back Jim Weatherford is the only Vol to earn All-America honors while wearing the number 30 for UT. His accolades came in 1968, the year between Doug Dickey's two SEC championships and the ﬁrst season played on Neyland Stadium's artiﬁcial turf. One of the six Vols on the 1968 squad who would be named All-Americans during their careers, Weatherford helped the Tennessee defense post two shutouts and hold three other opponents to just a touchdown as the Vols went 8-2-1 on the year. The two-year starter was part of the initial stages of Tennessee's dominant defensive era. Following his career at Rocky Top, Weatherford was drafted in the 15th round of the 1969 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

"As a walk-on, you are not allowed to choose or debate over a number for your college career. In fact, walk-ons' locker numbers are assigned #100, 101, 102, etc. If a walk-on is selected to dress on gameday then you are assigned a certain number to wear with pride when you run through the T. I walked on to the University of Tennessee to earn a scholarship, earn a chance to play in Neyland Stadium, and earn my own number. Through God's blessings I achieved all three of those accomplishments. My career was very difficult yet rewarding. I wore several other numbers during my career and I shed blood, sweat, and tears to earn everything I received. I hope every walk-on puts forth that kind of effort when entering any athletic program. Number 30 was special to me because it made me realize all the hard work I put in to earn my own number and to wear that number with pride on Saturdays. I wish the best of luck to my former teammates. Earn and wear your number with pride. Go Vols!"
