During Saturday afternoon's scrimmage at Neyland Stadium, it was business as usual for Hunter, who saw his first game-style action since tearing his ACL at Florida a week after his career game.
In the Vols' second and final scrimmage of the spring before next Saturday's DISH Orange and White Game, Hunter hauled in three passes for 70 yards, including a 50-yard TD on UT's first possession of the day.
Junior quarterback Tyler Bray completed his first seven passes and finished 13-of-23 for 180 yards and a touchdown.
Tennessee's initial drive started with the same theme that the first scrimmage saw, with an explosive 24-yard run from sophomore tailback Devrin Young, his longest of the day.
Bray found Hunter for a 5-yard pickup, their first connection in seven months. On the very next play, they hooked up again as Bray found Hunter streaking down the sideline for a 50-yard touchdown, the longest offensive play in either scrimmage.
Sophomore tailback Marlin Lane opened UT's next drive with a 22-yard run, surpassing his first scrimmage total by 14 yards in one play. Lane led the Vols in rushing with 71 yards on 12 carries (5.9 YPC), also adding a touchdown.
Bray and the first unit retrieved the ball on their own 1-yard line, but put together another impressive drive.
Completing four consecutive passes of 10 yards or more, including a pair to senior tight end Mychal Rivera, Bray efficiently moved the ball down the field to set up junior placekicker Michael Palardy's 42-yard field goal.
Rivera had a team-high five receptions for 43 yards.
Tennessee scored its second touchdown on a red zone situation. After two more Rivera receptions - this time from sophomore quarterback Justin Worley - Lane went between the tackles for a 7-yard gain and followed it up with a 3-yard score.
Shortly thereafter on another red zone situation starting at the 10, sophomore quarterback Tyler Page connected with junior wide receiver Tyler Drummer for a 7-yard touchdown.
Worley commanded his first scoring drive of the day highlighted by a 46-yard completion to sophomore wideout Jacob Carter, who led the Vols with 102 receiving yards on four catches.
A sack by sophomore defensive lineman Jordan Williams killed the drive's momentum, however. The Vols also picked up sacks from Willie Bohannon and Steven Fowlkes, while Justin Coleman, Izauea Lanier and Rod Wilks led Tennessee with six tackles a piece.
Sophomore placekicker Derrick Brodus capped the possession with a 44-yard field goal.
Bray started another hot streak (six straight completions) on a drive that started on his own 30-yard line, but the possession heavily featured Neal.
Neal, who rushed for a team-high 100 yards in UT's opening scrimmage, went for 39 yards on 12 carries Saturday. After catching a 27-yard pass from Bray down the sideline, he rushed twice for 10 yards as the Vols scored their final TD of the afternoon.
The Vols ran time-sensitive situations from that point forward, as freshman defensive back Tino Thomas registered UT's first interception, picking off Worley.
Facing 2:14 on the clock during his next drive, Worley hit Carter for completions of 26 and 20 yards to set up a "game-winning" 33-yard field goal from Brodus.
Sophomore defensive back Brian Randolph, who had UT's lone INT in the first scrimmage, picked off Bray on UT's final possession, also a two-minute drill.
Randolph, along with linebackers A.J. Johnson and Herman Lathers, had five tackles. Bohannon and Wilks led UT with two tackles for loss each.
Tennessee practices three more times next week before the spring culminates in the DISH Orange and White Game on April 21.
DISH O&W GAME SET FOR APRIL 21
The DISH Orange & White Game will take place on Saturday, April 21 with a 2:30 p.m., kickoff. Admission and parking will be free for all fans. In addition to free admission to the game, Fan Appreciation Day will feature an autograph signing with head coach Derek Dooley, assistant coaches and Vol players. The signing, held in recent years at Haslam Field, will be held on the field at Neyland Stadium from 12:15-1:15 p.m.
