Puleo to Headline Vol Baseball Luncheon

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Former Major League pitcher Charlie Puleo will be the guest speaker at the first Tennessee Baseball Luncheon of the 2012 campaign, to be held at noon on Thursday, March 22, in the MVP Room at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Tickets for the event are $10 per person with UT Bullpen Club members receiving a $5 discount. Those who attend will also receive a sneak peek of UT's game plan for its upcoming series against No. 2 Kentucky and hear from the Vol coaching staff and selected players as they give an update on the season. An eight-year MLB veteran, Puleo pitched for the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves from 1981-89. Originally drafted in the 13th round by the Detroit Tigers in 1973, he went on to play at Seton Hall University before signing with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1978.
Puleo made his Major League debut for the Mets in 1981 where he played for two seasons before being traded to the Reds as part of a deal for Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver. He spent his final four seasons with the Braves before retiring in 1989. In total, he pitched over 630 Major League innings, spanning 180 games, going 29-39 with a 4.25 ERA and two saves.
Following his MLB career, Puleo spent time as a minor league pitching coach for the Baltimore Orioles before serving as the head baseball coach at William Blount High School in Maryville, Tenn., where he recorded over 200 wins with the Governors.
