Through five holes Monday at San Diego Country Club, Tennessee appeared ready to catch the next flight home.
But opening day of the San Diego Intercollegiate was scheduled for two full rounds — not five holes — and the Vols bounced back in impressive fashion to begin their spring season. UT had climbed into a tie for third place when darkness fell in Chula Vista, Calif., suspending play around 6 p.m. Pacific time.
Four Tennessee golfers are among the top 25 on the individual leaderboard, led by Garrick Porteous in seventh place at 2 over par with two holes remaining in his second round.
Brandon Rodgers and Jay Vandeventer are among the group tied for 12th place at 4 over, with three and four holes remaining, respectively. And Rick Lamb stands at 7 over par in a tie for 25th place with two holes remaining in his second round. Tennessee's fifth golfer, Danny Keddie, completed both rounds and is tied for 76th place at 19-over 163.
The Vols shot 7-over 295 for their opening 18 holes after getting off to a terrible start in the shotgun format. UT's four scoring players, after just five holes apiece, were a combined 12 over par thanks to eight bogeys and two double-bogeys.
But Porteous and Rodgers rallied to shoot 73s, Vandeventer 74 and Lamb 75 as the Vols climbed from dead last in that early going to a solid fourth.
The second round has been nearly as good, with Tennessee 10 over par for an aggregate score of 17 over. The Vols are tied for third with San Diego and trail only Washington at 8 over and Southern California at 11 over. UCLA is fifth at 18 over par.
Round 2 resumes Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. Pacific time, with Round 3 to follow immediately using another shotgun start. Teams are keeping the same pairings for all three rounds. Tennessee's playing partners are Augusta State, Point Loma Nazarene and Washington.
Rodgers made his return to the UT lineup a good one. The Farragut sophomore, after a double-bogey 6 on his very first hole, played his final 17 holes of the morning in 1 under par. Rodgers poured in 14 pars and posted birdies at Nos. 16-17. In the afternoon, Rodgers was even-par through 11 but ended with bogeys on three of his last four played. He's at 3 over with three holes remaining.
Vandeventer played steady throughout, shooting 2 over in the morning and 2 over thus far for Round 2. For the opening 18, the Bristol junior posted a birdie at the par-5 14th and then at his finishing hole, the par-4 seventh, against four bogeys. In the afternoon, Vandeventer had one birdie and three bogeys with four holes remaining.
Lamb, like Rodgers, rallied from an opening double bogey. The left-hander posted three birdies and four bogeys the rest of the way to finish his first 18 holes with 75. In the afternoon, Lamb was 5 over par through 12 holes but birdied the par-3 third and has two holes remaining.
Keddie never recovered after starting his first round bogey, double, bogey, bogey, double. Three birdies weren't nearly enough to overcome four double-bogeys en route to a season-worst 83. In the afternoon, Keddie began with a birdie but birdied no more and shot 80. The sophomore entered this week leading the Vols with a 72.75 stroke average.
Tuesday's weather forecast for the San Diego area calls for sunshine along with some cloudy intervals. The high temperature should reach the upper 50s, with winds from 10 to 15 mph.
