Fast finishes by Garrick Porteous and Jay Vandeventer lifted Tennessee to a solid fourth-place result Tuesday at the San Diego Intercollegiate.
Porteous played his final nine holes in 4 under par, closing with 69 to finish the tournament alone in second place at 1 under par 215. It marked the senior captain's best collegiate showing and his fourth top-four finish in the last year.
Vandeventer joined his teammate in the top 10 after shooting a final-round 71 that included birdies on two of his last three holes. The Bristol native finished at 4-over 220 for the tournament and now owns a pair of top 10s this season in just five events played.
Tennessee carded its best score (293) of the two-day tourney in Tuesday's final round, which was played after the completion of Monday's suspended second round. The Vols tied host San Diego State for fourth place at 23-over-par 877 and trailed only the top-10 ranked trio of Washington (870), Southern California (877) and UCLA (884).
Rick Lamb added 74 and Brandon Rodgers 79 to round out the UT scoring. Danny Keddie shot 83.
The Morpeth, England, product finished third last spring at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational to begin his current streak of impressive results, and then was fourth at the NCAA Central Regional in Indiana. Porteous opened this season with a third-place result at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
"I felt like my game was coming," said Porteous, who took over the team lead with a 72.8 scoring average. "Last week at the Jones Cup, I had spells of playing well but I guess it was just putting the whole thing together for three rounds. It can still be a lot better but it's definitely encouraging.
"It's also an encouraging start to the semester for the team. Everyone can play a lot better, but we will take positives out of this week."
Lamb carded two birdies for his final round and saved one for the final hole to shoot 75. Both birdies came on par 5s and the lefthander shot 1 under on the par 5s for the week. Lamb finished in a tie for 25th place at 9-over-par 225.
Rodgers shot 75 for his second round and then closed with 79. The sophomore was 3 over par through 12 holes before finishing with four more bogeys. But Rodgers, making his first lineup appearance since fall 2010, scored in all four rounds for the Vols and tied for 32nd place at 11-over 227.
Keddie finished a disappointing weekend with his second 83 of the week. The England sophomore, who was Tennessee's stroke-average leader during the fall season, finished in 78th place at 30-over-par 246.
The Vols are idle until the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, set for Feb. 26-28 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
