KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Former Vols Rhyne Williams and Tennys Sandgren continued their home tournament run in singles Thursday at the Knoxville Challenger.
Sandgren beat Adrien Bossel of Switzerland 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the afternoon match to reach the quarterfinals on the familiar courts of the Goodfriend Tennis Center, a place where he was undefeated in his two years at 2010-11.
Sandgren plays Sam Groth in Friday's afternoon session to play for a spot in the semifinals.
In his evening match, Williams beat fourth-seeded Mischa Zverev 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Williams has reached six Challenger quarterfinals this year, including last week at Charlottesville, Va. He is looking for his first career semifinal appearance at the Challenger level, taking on seventh-seeded Tim Smyczek of the United States in the final evening match.
