Coach's Evaluation:
"Derek brought an impressive skill package with him to Knoxville. At a legit 6-8, he's a consistent threat from the 3-point line. He has great court awareness and can really pass the ball. `D-Reese' will develop into a matchup problem for opponents. He has an advantage over bigger guys because he can run off screens and handle the ball. Smaller guys will not be able to contain him in the post or keep him off the glass. It will be fun to watch him progress over the course of this season."
3-Point Play:
- Played for Puerto Rico's U19 National Team at the 2012 Nike Global Challenge in July and was the tournament's second-leading scorer, landing him a spot on the International All-Tournament Team
- Lives with fellow freshman guard Armani Moore
- Has five siblings: three brothers and two sisters
