Carpet Capital Collegiate

Vols Tied for 2nd Through 36 Holes
September 10, 2011 | Men's Golf
Sept. 10, 2011
Tennessee climbed into contention Saturday at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, firing a 7-under-par 281 to move into a three-way tie for second with 18 holes remaining.
Garrick Porteous led the charge with a 4-under 68 that moved him into a tie for third on the individual leaderboard. Jay Vandeventer joined Porteous in the top 10 with a 69 to match his career low. Danny Keddie added a 71 and Darren Renwick 73 as the Vols equaled their low round from all of last season.
Only Auburn was better -- both for Saturday and through 36 holes at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga. The Tigers shot 279 and stand alone in first at 7-under 569. Chattanooga and Clemson join UT in the second-place scramble at 2-under 574, followed by Alabama at 575 as the only other team under par.
Porteous carded three birdies on each side, and if not for a double-bogey at the par-4 sixth hole would have matched his collegiate low of 66 set at the 2010 Schenkel E-Z-Go Classic. The senior is at 4-under 140 for the tournament and trails leaders Bryden Macpherson of Georgia and Benjamin Weilguni of Chattanooga by one stroke.
Birdie-Par-Eagle Start
Vandeventer broke quickly from the gate, starting birdie-par-eagle. He played the final 15 holes to even-par -- one birdie and one bogey on each side -- and is tied for 10th place at 2-under 142. The junior's Saturday 69 matched his career low, set two years ago at the Carpet Capital and tied last year at the Windon Memorial.
Keddie's 71 shaved one stroke off his Friday result to improve the sophomore one position in the standings. Keddie finished with three birdies against two bogeys and is tied for 13th place at 1-under 143.
Renwick improved five strokes from Friday to shoot 73. The senior carded four birdies over his first nine holes to offset a double-bogey at the par-5 12th. He was still 1 under for the day when he doubled his final hole, the difficult par-5 ninth, and is tied for 43rd place at 7-over 151.
Marshall Talkington didn't figure in Saturday's UT scoring, but the sophomore's 74 was a career low and a two-stroke improvement over Friday's round. Talkington, who fired a pair of 75s last season in limited action, is tied for 39th place at 6-over 150.
The Vols begin Sunday's final round at 9 a.m. on the No. 1 hole, playing alongside Auburn and Chattanooga. The weather forecast calls for temperatures in the low- to mid-80s under sunny skies, with light winds.
