Former Vol, Hall of Famer Steffy Dies

Former University of Tennessee freshman guard and later football Hall of Fame member Joe Steffy died at the age of 85 Saturday in Newburgh, N.Y.
Steffy, the Outland Trophy winner while at Army, was an All-America that same year in 1947. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1987.
A native of Chattanooga, Steffy played as a freshman on the 1944 Vols squad that went undefeated in the regular season and played Southern California in the Rose Bowl. Steffy transferred after his freshman campaign to Army, where he finished his illustrious career.
The three Army teams on which he lettered posted a combined record of 23-2-3 and won the 1945 and 1946 national championships. He was selected captain of the 1947 squad.
