Philip Pettitt capped a grueling six-day effort at the PGA Final Stage Qualifying Tournament with a final-round 73 Monday to earn promotion to the Nationwide Tour for 2012.
The former Tennessee golfer finished just on the good side of the cut line for full Nationwide Tour status, playing his 108 holes of golf over six rounds in an aggregate score of 2-under-par 430.
Pettitt tied for 72nd place in the 172-player field, which was quite a comeback after he opened 74-75 and stood 145th through two rounds.
The top 25 finishers and ties earned full PGA Tour membership cards for next season, and the next-closest-to-50 claimed spots on the Nationwide Tour.
Pettitt's final round of 1-over 73 was his best result of the week on the PGA West Stadium Course after earlier rounds of 74 and 76. He shot 75-66-66 for his three rounds on the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course.
In 2011, Pettitt placed third on the NGA Pro Golf Tour money list in his third full season on that tour. He won twice and made the cut in all 17 of his tournament appearances this year, finishing with winnings of $112,121.50.
He then won his Second Stage Qualifying Tournament in Brooksville, Fla., by five strokes to advance to this week's Q-School finals in La Quinta, Calif.
In 2009, Pettitt was NGA Pro Golf Tour Rookie of the Year. The Murfreesboro native helped the Vols to a pair of NCAA Championship appearances during his 2004-08 collegiate career.
