FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Momentum shifted quickly in the closing three games in the opening round of the USTA/ITA Intercollegiate Championships.
Everything was going in Tennessee's favor, until suddenly, it wasn't.
Libietis and Reese had an opportunity to lead by two breaks but lost 8-6 to Texas' Chris Camillone and David Holiner on Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The Longhorns were serving at 6-4, and the Vols had a break point chance at 30-40 that would have pushed them just one game from advancing.
From that moment on, however, errors plagued the Vol duo. Texas won 11 of the final 12 points of the game, breaking Libietis' serve to clinch the match at 8-6.
"They turned it on toward the end," Reese said. "We had a break point to go up 7-4 and missed it on a lucky shot. From there, they took advantage."
Libietis and Reese, playing in their first national collegiate tournament, both lost in doubles for the first time in their careers. Libietis is 9-1 and Reese is 8-1.
"I think it was definitely a learning match," Reese said. "We have to show a little more energy on the court. We have to be accountable for each other, I think. Keep each other up. He's responsible for me and I'm responsible for him. We'll work on that."
The Vols will play in the consolation draw tomorrow. The schedule and matchups has not been posted.
