To Note
The Series
• Tonight's game marked Tennessee's first with head coach Cuonzo Martin on the bench. Martin is UT's 18th men's basketball coach.
• The Volunteers are now 63-18 all-time in exhibition games, including an 12-1 record in Thompson-Boling Arena.
For Starters
• Tonight's starters: senior Cameron Tatum, juniors Kenny Hall and Jeronne Maymon and sophomores Trae Golden and Jordan McRae.
• Tonight's attendance: 15,344
• Tatum was UT's lone returning starter from last season. One of two seniors on the roster (Renaldo Woolridge), Tatum is also UT's leading returning scorer with 8.8 points averaged over 34 games in 2010-11.
• Tatum scored Tennessee's first points of the exhibition season on a three-pointer with 16:44 remaining in the first half. Carson-Newman's Antoine Davis poured in the first two buckets at Thompson-Boling Arena in the exhbition, each three pointers to give the Eagles an early 6-0 lead, their largest advantage of the game.
• A pair of Vols from last year's team, Tobias Harris and Melvin Goins, sat courtside. Harris was UT's eighth all-time first-round NBA draft pick in June, when the Charlotte Bobcats drafted him 19th overall and traded his rights to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Newcomer Vols See First Action
• Seven players saw their first action in Tennessee uniforms this evening: Junior transfers Dwight Miller and Rob Murphy and freshmen Galen Campbell, Brandon Lopez, Yemi Makanjuola, Josh Richardson and Wes Washpun.
• The new Vols combined for 10 points and 17 rebounds. Makanjuola led the way with four points.
McRae's Takeover
•Trailing 16-10 with 11:18 remaining in the first half, sophomore guard Jordan McRae scored 12 consecutive points in just more than three minutes as Tennessee went on a 12-4 run to take its first lead of the game at 22-20. McRae's streak alone doubled his highest point total from his freshman season, when he scored six vs. Belmont (12/23/10).
•McRae finished with a game-high 17 points on 5-of-14 shooting, while chipping in a game-high three blocks and a pair of steals.
Maymon Whips Out Windex
•Junior forward Jeronne Maymon ripped down a game-high 15 rebounds, more than any Vol recorded last season. In 2010-11, the Vols had three individual 13-rebound efforts: Brian Williams vs. VCU (11/24/10), Williams vs. Oakland (12/14/10) and Tobias Harris vs. Memphis (1/5/11).
• Maymon's career high in rebounds is eight, coming at Charlotte (12/17/10).
• He also scored 10 points to post a double-double. His scoring high last season was 10 points vs. Memphis (1/5/11).
Closing First Half Strong
•Over the final 3:16 of the opening half, Tennessee scored the final 11 points on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor and a trio of free throws. The Vols took a 39-30 lead into intermission, their largest lead of the game to that point.
McBee For Three
• It's no surprise that junior guard Skylar McBee's first field goal was a three. He's connected on 47 in his career. On the evening, McBee drained two three-pointers, finishing with six points.
Golden's Game
•Sophomore guard Trae Golden engineered the Tennessee offense with a game-high five assists. Golden also posted Tennessee's second-best scoring effort with 14 points.
• Golden averaged three points and 2.2 assists last season as a freshman off the bench.
Hustle Board
• Tennessee led multiple "hustle" categories. The Vols outrebounded Carson-Newman 51-32 and were active defensively. UT had seven blocks to the Eagles' three, and also registered 11 steals to Carson-Newman's seven.
•The Vols posted 22 offensive rebounds, including seven from Jeronne Maymon.
•Tennessee's defense held the Eagles to 16.7 percent shooting from the field in the second half, only allowing Carson-Newman to connect on four field goals.
• Carson-Newman converted more three-pointers (6) in the first half than field goals in the second stanza. Overall, Carson-Newman shot 16-of-51 (31.4 percent) for the game).
