Tennessee placed three golfers in the top 20 and stands middle of the pack in sixth place after Thursday's play at the Cabo Collegiate in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.
The Vols shot 11-over-par 295 as a team in windy conditions and trail first-place Arkansas (281) by 14 strokes. But after the seventh-ranked Razorbacks, the field is much more tightly compacted and Tennessee is behind second-place St. Mary's (292) by only three strokes.
Southeastern Louisiana (293), Loyola Marymount (294) and Santa Clara (294) round out the top five. Tennessee is level with San Francisco (295) one-third of the way through the 54-hole event after firing its best round since the Carpet Capital Collegiate back in early September.
Eight of the 12 teams entered are ranked among the nation's top 100, including Tennessee at No. 44 by Golfweek/Sagarin and No. 45 by Golfstat.com.
Danny Keddie is tied for eighth place after playing the Club Compestre Golf Course to an even-par 71 strokes. Keddie's round was his team-leading sixth of par or better in 10 total rounds this season, and it lowered his average first-round score to an even 72.0.
Garrick Porteous and Darren Renwick are tied for 20th place at 3-over-par 74. Porteous still leads the team with just one round above 75 this fall, while Renwick's card was his best in an opening round this season.
Rick Lamb closed out the Tennessee scoring with a 5-over 76. The former Santa Clara golfer is tied for 33rd place and remains third on the team with a 75.0 season stroke average.
Jay Vandeventer added 77 to tie for 42nd place and Marshall Talkington, playing this week as an individual, opened with 78 and is tied for 48th. Thursday marked only the second round in 10 this fall for Vandeventer to finish outside the scoring four.
Three golfers share the first-round individual lead at 3-under-par 68.
Friday's second round begins at 8:30 a.m. Mountain time (10:30 a.m. Eastern). The weather forecast calls for sunny skies and a high reaching the low 90s, with winds of 12 mph.
