Tennessee's second consecutive 10-over-par 298 dropped the Vols three places in the standings Saturday at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club.
UT is eighth in the 15-team field heading into Sunday's final round at Jonesborough's Blackthorn Club at The Ridges.
Junior Rick Lamb fired an even-par 72 to lead the Tennessee effort. Garrick Porteous added a 74, Jay Vandeventer 75 and Marshall Talkington 77 to close out the scoring. Danny Keddie carded an 80 and Darren Renwick, playing as an individual, shot 74.
North Carolina State maintained the team lead through 36 holes, but it is down to a single stroke over Virginia. The Wolfpack leads 583 to 584 over their ACC rivals, while Memphis jumped to third at 587. Wake Forest (590) and Kent State (591) rounded out the top five.
Tennessee sits in eighth place at 20-over-par 596. The Vols trail Missouri (595) by one stroke and Clemson (594) by two, and are six shots clear of ninth-place UNC Wilmington (602).
Porteous rallied Saturday from a first-nine score of 40 to post three birdies on the second nine and shoot 74. The senior is tied for 23rd place at 5-over 149.
Vandeventer shaved four strokes off his opening-round score to shoot 75. The Bristol junior was even through 14 holes before closing with three bogeys down the stretch. Vandeventer is tied for 48th place at 10-over 154.
Talkington bogeyed five of his first eight holes Saturday but steadied to play even par the rest of the way. The sophomore is tied for 45th place at 9-over 153.
Keddie managed just one birdie while shooting 80 for the first time this season. The sophomore is tied with Talkington for 45th place at 9-over 153.
Renwick continued improving his game with Saturday's 74. The senior is playing this weekend as an individual in hopes of turning around what has been a tough start to the season. Renwick is tied for 23rd place at 5-over 149.
Sunday's final round begins for Tennessee at 8:30 a.m., with the Vols playing alongside Missouri and UNC Wilmington. Weather conditions call for sunny skies and a high of 75, with winds at 13 mph.
