MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tennessee women's tennis sophomore Kayla McMurry experienced both the emotions of winning and losing Friday as the only Lady Vol to compete in the qualifiers of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
The Knoxville, Tenn., native opened the day with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 victory over Louisville's Gabrielle Duncan. With an opportunity to advance to the regional's main singles draw, however, McMurry fell to Andrea Arques-Garcia (Memphis) 6-3, 6-2.
Five Lady Vols will compete in the singles main draw beginning Saturday, including senior Natalie Pluskota and sophomore Brynn Boren, who are seeded first and second, respectively.
Boren, also seeded first in the doubles main draw with freshman Sarah Toti, captured both the singles and doubles titles at last year's Ohio Valley Regional. The duo, which boasts a 7-2 record this season, will be the first Lady Vols in action Saturday with a 9 a.m. ET first serve.
The opening two rounds of doubles are scheduled for Saturday morning, while the first round of singles is slated for the afternoon.
The tournament, which includes back draws, runs through Tuesday, with the winners advancing to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships (Nov. 3-6) in New York.
