KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Junior P.J. Polk has added another award to his lengthy list of accomplishments this season, garnering a spot on the CollegeBaseball360.com Primetime Performer Weekly Honor Roll following a spectacular week at the plate. He was previously named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for the second time this year and claimed Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors from Collegiate Baseball newspaper on Monday.
Polk, who hit .524 last week while leading the Volunteers to a 4-1 record including their first SEC series victory of 2010, becomes the second UT player to be honored by CB360 this season as sophomore southpaw Steven Gruver picked up Primetime Pitcher of the Week accolades on March 2 after a sparkling performance against then 10th-ranked Oregon State.
A native of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Polk joins 17 other honorees on the weekly honor roll. The list is comprised of seven pitchers, three leftfielders, two catchers, a pair of centerfielders, a first baseman and one third baseman. Of the 18 total players, there were seven juniors, seven sophomores and three freshmen.
A 5-9 outfielder, Polk finished the week with a team-high 11 hits in 24 at-bats to pace the Volunteers to mid-week triumphs over Tennessee Tech and Presbyterian College and back-to-back victories on the road against No. 11 Ole Miss to lead UT to its first SEC series victory of the season. He also topped the squad with nine runs while blasting out four longballs, including the first two home run performance of his career against the Rebels on Saturday.
In all, Polk had four home runs on the week to give him a team-leading six on the year. He had at least one hit in all five games to extend his season-long hitting streak to 10 games, moving him within one of his career-long streak of 11 games. Polk slugged at an incredible 1.095 rate while posting an on-base percentage of .615 as he walked four times and was hit by a pitch once. He also stole two bases in two attempts to increase his team-high total to 14 on the year.
