Seeded Vols Advance on First Day of ITA Regionals

Every Vol seeded in singles and doubles advanced in the opening rounds Friday at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships in Lexington, Ky.
Top-seeded senior John-Patrick Smith, fifth-seeded sophomore Rhyne Williams and ninth-seeded sophomore Tennys Sandgren all won their first-round singles matches in straight sets to advance to the round of 32. All three, along with sophomore Edward Jones, reached the doubles quarterfinals.
Smith produced his most lopsided victory of the fall season, nearly shutting out Ivan Mojsejev of IUPUI 6-1, 6-0. Williams defeated Xavier's Richard Canelas 6-2, 6-4. Sandgren extended his winning streak to a season-best five matches with a quick 6-1, 6-3 victory over Landon Neuman of Wright State.
Sophomore Taylor Patrick, who won two matches to qualify for the main draw Thursday, lost in straight sets to 12th-seeded Viktor Maksimcuk of Louisville. Jones lost in three sets to Purdue's Szymon Tatarczyk.
The Vols had two doubles teams playing together for the first time, and both ended the day with two victories each on their way to the quarterfinals. Smith and Sandgren, seeded second, defeated Jan Alafiz and Brian Dedge of Wright State 8-2 and Sander Gille and Jesus Bandres of ETSU 8-4.
Williams and Jones started the day by picking up a late break to beat Kentucky's Maks Gold and Matt Davis 9-7. In the second round, they earned a more routine 8-3 win over Vanderbilt's Alex Zotov and Charlie Jones of Vanderbilt.
Two rounds of singles and the doubles quarterfinals are on the schedule for Saturday.
Last season, the Vols faced each other for the doubles championship. Williams and Boris Conkic defeated Smith and Davey Sandgren 8-6 to capture the title and advance to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
