BAUGH WILL NOT PLAY THIS SEASON
Jenny Moshak, University of Tennessee Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, announced this afternoon that Lady Vol basketball junior forward Vicki Baugh will sit out this season.
"Drs. Greg Mathien and Russell Betcher, UT team orthopaedists, performed surgery on Vicki's left knee this afternoon at UT Medical Center," said Moshak. "The surgery addressed a meniscus tear and a partial medial meniscectomy was performed."
Baugh had been rehabbing her left knee since undergoing a second anterior cruciate ligament surgery on Feb. 24, 2009 and had hoped to return this season.
According to Moshak, Baugh's surgery went well today and she will begin rehabilitation of the knee immediately. Typical recovery generally ranges four to six weeks.
"Vicki had been making solid progress up until early December when she felt her knee move awkwardly," said Moshak. "She began to experience swelling and diagnostic testing revealed meniscal damage which was repaired today.
"The good news, in the words of her doctors, is that the ACL looks pristine. That is outstanding!" said Moshak.
On Feb. 2, 2009, the 6-4 forward from Sacramento, Cal., re-injured her ACL in an 80-70 loss at #2-ranked Oklahoma. The injury occurred during the second half as Baugh was helping her Lady Vol team rally against the Sooners. Dr. Greg Mathien diagnosed the ACL tear on Feb. 3, 2009 and Drs. Mathien and Betcher performed surgery on Feb. 24, 2009, to address the ACL revision and repaired a medial meniscus tear of her knee.
A key member of the squad heading into her sophomore season, she had seen very limited action since suffering a sprain of the knee in practice on Jan. 1, 2009, in preparation for the game at Rutgers. In the 2008-09 campaign, she played in 14 games and started 10. She was averaging 6.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg prior to the injury.
The February 2009 incident was Baugh's second ACL injury. She was injured in the last game of her 2007-08 rookie season, in the 2008 NCAA title game versus Stanford. Baugh's slashing-through-the-key lay-up gave the Lady Vols a double-digit lead (55-44) that they would not relinquish down the stretch en route to NCAA Championship number eight. Unfortunately for Baugh, that was the play when the injury occurred to her left knee. On April 11, 2008, an MRI confirmed that Baugh had torn her ACL and she had surgery on May 13, 2008.
During her freshman season, Baugh played in all 38 games helping the Lady Vols to a 36-2 record. She averaged 5.3 ppg and 4.0 rpg in 13.1 minutes per contest. She shot a team best 55.2 percent from the field (79-143) and knocked in 77.8 percent of her charity tosses. She recorded six games in double-digits scoring including a season high 12 point effort versus Purdue in the NCAA Tournament. Baugh had a monster game on the boards against Louisiana Tech hauling in 16 rebounds.
With Baugh's status now known, Tennessee is down three post players for the remainder of the season as 6-3 freshman post Faith Dupree is sidelined with back problems and 6-1 sophomore Amber Gray is recovering from both shoulder and brain surgeries.
