The Kansas City Royals recalled right-handed pitcher Luke Hochevar from their Omaha Triple-A affiliate Monday. Hochevar will get his first Major League start of the season Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics.
After going 5-0 in six starts in Omaha, Hochevar boasts a 0.90 ERA, 30 strikeouts and was named the Pacific Coast League's pitcher of the week May 4.
Royals' manager Trey Hillman decided to call up the former Vol to take Sidney Ponson's spot in the rotation.
"We'll get Hoch up here and see how he's doing," Hillman said. "He's coming off one of his best outings so far this year and, hopefully, that'll help our team win ballgames."
Last season, Hochevar made his MLB debut in relief against the New York Yankees, throwing three scoreless innings. He went on to make three more relief appearances and finish the season starting against the Cleveland Indians Sept. 30, 2008.
