The Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday that Tennessee's John-Patrick Smith had earned Player of the Week honors after leading the Vols to the Blue Gray Tennis Classic championship this past weekend.
Smith earned Tournament MVP honors at the Blue Gray after going undefeated in singles at the No. 1 position in UT's four victories. Three of his four victories were over players ranked in the top-50 in the nation.
This season, the UT sophomore has a 10-3 mark at the No. 1 position in the dual-match lineup with all but three of those matches coming against ranked opponents. Smith has an overall record of 24-8 this year and is currently ranked seventh nationally in singles.
This is the second Player of the Week honor for Smith this season. The 2008 SEC Freshman of the Year also won the award after capturing the SEC Indoor Singles Title in January.
Smith and the rest of the fifth-ranked Volunteers return to action Friday when they host Arkansas in a match that is scheduled to begin at noon. All home matches are free to the public. Live scoring for those that cannot attend can be found at UTsports.com.
