Tennessee junior men's tennis player Matt Brewer was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week Monday following his singles and doubles victories in UT's 4-3 victory over 13th-ranked Illinois last Saturday.
"I think it is a well deserved honor for Matt," head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "He stepped in at a time when his team needed him the most and to be as ready as he was is a credit to how hard he's worked the past two years.
"We had confidence in Matt, even though he wasn't as battled tested as his teammates. He passed the test with flying colors. What was even more impressive then the victories is how he kept his teammates up and cheered them on during the match. He was always rooting for the guys to his left and right. It took a complete team effort to beat Illinois and Matt was an extraordinary teammate. We are very proud of him."
Brewer defeated Illinois' Brian Livingstone 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to tie the match at three. In the third set, Brewer trailed 5-4 before winning 12 consecutive points to win the set 7-5. It was only the UT junior's 10th appearance in the UT singles lineup.
Earlier in the match, Brewer teamed up with freshman Christian Hansen to win 8-6 at the No. 3 spot in the doubles lineup. The win clinched the crucial doubles point for UT.
Tennessee returns to action Friday in the ITA Indoor National Championships. The event is being at the Midway Club in Chicago. The tournament draw will be released Tuesday, Feb. 10.
