Fago, Williams Reach Regional Quarterfinals

Tennessee junior Matteo Fago and freshman Rhyne Williams advanced to the quarterfinals with two victories Saturday at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships in Bloomington, Ind.
Senior Davey Sandgren and junior John-Patrick Smith, the nations top-ranked doubles team, won another match to reach the quarterfinals. Williams and junior teammate Boris Conkic also progressed to the next round.
"It was good wins for Rhyne and Matteo today," Tennessee head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "Tomorrow will be a good gauge of those guys. Our doubles looked good today as well.
"We are still figuring it all out, but the effort is there."
Fago, a No. 9 seed, won his second round match over host Indiana's Jeremy Langer 6-1, 6-4. He later earn another straight set victory by defeating Daniel Isaza of East Tennessee State 6-1, 6-3. He faced No. 58 John Peers in the quarterfinals Sunday.
Williams was also seeded ninth and won both his Saturday matches in straight sets. He defeated Xavier's Bobby Deye 6-2 6-2. In the round of 16, Williams won his eighth consecutive match by taking out the tournament's top seed, Austen Childs of Louisville, 6-2, 6-0. Childs is ranked No. 12 nationally by ITA.
Williams plays Eric Quigley of Kentucky, ranked 70th, in the quarterfinals. If Williams and Fago both win their quarterfinal match, they face each other in the semifinals.
Sandgren and Smith defeated ETSU's Daniel Isaza and Robin Akser 8-3. They followed with an 8-2 victory over Butler's Ben Raynauld and Bryce Warren. The Tennessee duo remains undefeated with a 5-0 record, and Smith has won all 10 doubles matches he has played this season.
Conkic and Williams, seeded sixth, advanced past Butler's Steven McLoughlin and Lenz Theodor 8-4. In the round of 16, Conkic and Williams shut out ETSU's Jesus Bandres and Sander Gille 8-0.
