The Tennessee football team landed 28 student-athletes on the 2008 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll.
Football's contingent was two more than last year and tied for the fifth largest in the league in that sport, trailing Florida and Vanderbilt with 37 apiece, Kentucky with 31 and Georgia with 29. Mississippi State also had 28 members make the list, followed by South Carolina with 24, Alabama 22, LSU and Mississippi 15 apiece, Auburn 13 and Arkansas seven.
The 2008 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll recognizes team members from the sports of football, soccer and volleyball and is based on grades from the 2008 spring, summer and fall terms. Each student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution. If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll. Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and nonscholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons. Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution. The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
Tennessee placed 48 on this year's squad after having 44 student-athletes one year ago on 2007 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll.
From the football squad, defensive lineman Stephen Darville of Rome, Ga., and fullback Ryan Hill of Kingston were selected for the fourth time in their UT careers. Three-time honorees are Jeff Cottam, Morgan Cox, Brent Freeman, Adam Myers-White, Austin Rogers, Cody Sullins and Cory Sullins. Student-athletes named for the second time are Jake Brown, Daniel Lincoln, Jacques McClendon, Nick Reveiz and Tyler Wolf.
