Vols Finish Day Two at UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational

The Tennessee men's tennis team had a strong doubles showing Saturday, on the second day of the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
The Vols went undefeated in doubles on day two after only winning one match on opening day. John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren defeated Calin Paar and Francois VanImpe of Nebraska, 8-3 to advance to the finals of the A-3 doubles bracket. The Vol netters face the 31st-ranked tandem of Dominic Inglot and Michael Shabaz of Virginia in the finals.
In the doubles back draw, UT's other three tandems all picked up victories. Christian Hansen and Jeremy Tweedt defeated Daniel Gilmer and Jason McNaughton of USC 9-8. Boris Conkic and Matteo Fago defeated Damon Gooch and Oscar Podlewski of Elon 8-5. Matt Brewer and Bryan Swartz completed the back draw sweep with an 8-6 win over Radford's Igor Ogrizek and Ivan Salec.
Conkic won his singles quarterfinal match, 6-3, 6-1 over 103rd-ranked Kiril Dimitrov of Duke to advance. In the semifinals, 82nd-ranked Sanam Singh of Virginia knocked off the Vol when Conkic retired with the third set tied at 1-1.
Fago and Smith, both winners on Friday, dropped their quarterfinal matches. Smith fell to UVA's Shabaz 7-6, 5-7, 7-5. Fago lost to Simon Childs of Louisville, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).
In the singles back draw, Smith rebounded from his quarterfinal loss to defeated 75th-ranked Nico Delgado of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 6-2.
Also in the singles back draw, Hansen picked up his first singles victory as a Vol as the Germany native knocked off Ogrizek of Radford, 6-0, 6-3.
