The Tennessee men's tennis team advanced three members to the quarterfinals of the UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
"We got off to a dubious start," associate head coach Chris Woodruff said. "I was proud of our effort in the afternoon. I thought we stepped up in a couple of different matches. The areas (head coach) Sam (Winterbotham) and I thought we'd have some success in, we did, and in the areas we thought we'd struggle, we did.
The day started off in doubles where only one of UT's four doubles teams was able to advance. Davey Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith defeated Pedro Graber (Virginia Tech) and Leif Sunderland (Virginia) 9-7 to advance to the semifinals of the A-3 doubles flight.
The Vols could not get going early in singles either as UT lost all five of their first round matches. Christian Hansen and Bryan Swartz both made their Tennessee debuts but neither freshman could get a win as they fell in the first round of the A-1 flight.
In the A-2 flight, Sandgren battled hard against 123rd-ranked Calin Parr of Nebraska but ultimately succumbed to the Cornhusker, 6-4, 7-5. Fellow junior Matt Brewer won the first set in his match against Virginia's Reese Milner but the Cavalier rebounded to win the next two sets to advance. Jeremy Tweedt lost to Oscar Podlewski of Elon in his first round match.
Sandgren and Tweedt rebounded from their slow starts in the main draw to win in the back draw and both will continue play Saturday in the singles consolation bracket.
Three Vols had received byes out of the first round and all three netters won to end UT's day on a high note.
Tenth-ranked John-Patrick Smith defeated Steve Johnson of Southern California, 6-4, 6-1 for his first victory of the season. Smith faces 104th-ranked Michael Shabaz of Virginia in an A-1 singles quarterfinals Saturday.
Matteo Fago, ranked 117th, rebounded from a tough first set to win going away against Virginia Tech's Luka Somen, 26, 6-1, 6-4. The UT sophomore faces Simon Childs of Louisville in the quarterfinals of A-1 singles.
Boris Conkic scored a victory over a ranked opponent with a straight-set win over 120th-ranked Jason McNaughton of Southern California. Conkic won the first set 6-4 and dominated the second to advance. The Serbia native faces 103rd ranked Kiril Dimitrov of Duke in an A-2 singles quarterfinal.
Play begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. Results can be found at virginiasports.com or UTsports.com.
