Vols Open Practice Schedule Saturday
August 01, 2008 | Football
?? Eleven freshmen signees and two junior college transfers make their Tennessee practice debuts Saturday afternoon at Haslam Field.
The Vols hold their annual Media Day tomorrow morning before hitting the field in helmets and shorts. The dress code stays the same Sunday before two days with shoulder pads as part of the NCAA-mandated four-day acclimation period. Tennessee???s first day in full pads is Wednesday.
Two incoming student-athletes, Stephaun Raines and Gerald Williams, arrive in Knoxville from the junior college ranks. Raines enters as a redshirt freshman after graduating from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College. He did not play either of the last two seasons. Williams, meanwhile, returns to UT having graduated from City College of San Francisco. He???s back after originally signing with the Vols in 2005. Since then, the Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., native made it through one year of prep school and two years at CCSF, where he turned in 146 tackles and six forced fumbles in his only playing season for the 2007 junior college national champions.
Two February signees, Marlon Walls and Montori Hughes, have not yet been cleared to practice, while signee Casey Kelly was a first-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox and signed with the baseball club last month.
Head coach Phillip Fulmer and his staff have scheduled 19 practices sessions and three full scrimmages through Aug. 23, when game week preparations begin. UT opens its 2008 campaign Sept. 1 at UCLA in the Rose Bowl in a prime time Monday Night affair on ESPN.
