Paisley books English Amateur semifinal spot
August 01, 2008 | Men's Golf
Chris Paisley scored his second English Amateur victory over Matthew Nixon when he beat the Lancashire boy cap 2 and 1 in this morning???s quarter final at Woodhall Spa.
The pair met in the first round at Bromborough in 2005 when Paisley completed a 6 and 5 success.
This time it was much closer with nothing to separate them over the front nine covered by both in 37 shots. However, Nixon three-putted the tenth and 11th from the apron to go 2-down while a Paisley birdie-four at the 14th gave the Northumberland lad a firm grip on the match.
Nixon cut the deficit with a birdie-three at 16 while the end came at the par four 17th where Paisley holed a 25-footer for birdie. He will now meet Adam Keogh who put out former boy cap Luke Goddard at the 21st.
Keogh, the local hope, got off to a flier while Goddard was slightly off his game. The Boston lad won the second and fourth to go 2-up and was three ahead at the seventh with another par.
But he went off the boil midway through and Goddard seized his chance to win the eighth, ninth and 11th to go all-square. However, the Middlesex 20 year old lost the 12th to a par and despite getting back on terms at the 14th, fell behind again at the next but squared the match with a birdie on the final green.
They halved the first two extra holes but at the 21st, Keogh fired hi approach to seven feet and holed for a birdie and victory after Goddard took two putts from around 20 feet.
Tom Sherreard is also through to the last four after ending the run of Kevin Freeman on the final green. The Kent man, who did so well in the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, won the first hole with a par four and always had his nose in front.
The lead was still one at the turn but the back nine proved a see-saw affair. Sherreard went 2-up at the tenth where Freeman bogeyed but the BB&O man bounced back with a birdie-two at the 12th. However, another Freeman bogey at the next saw Sherreard 2-up again but the Kent man???s bogey-six at the 14th reduced the arrears again. The contest went to the 18th where Sherreard holes from 18 feet for birdie to close out the match.
He will now face Todd Adcock, the former Sussex Champion, who went ahead at the first and was always in control against Neil Raymond.
Adcock was 2-up at the turn and increased that at the tenth. He was temporarily pegged back but the man from the Nevill sailed through 3 and 1 on the 17th.
