ZANDER SELECTED TO SUN BOWL 75TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM
Carl Zander |
The Brut Sun Bowl, the nation???s second oldest bowl game, has had 75 different programs compete in the game, which is more than any other bowl in the nation.
Tennessee lost its only Sun Bowl appearance, a 28-27 decision to Maryland in 1984. Zander, however, sparkled for the Vols in earning the Jimmy Rogers Jr. Most Valuable Lineman award after that game. The Mendham, N.J., native recorded 24 tackles during the afternoon and led the 1984 Vols with 167 tackles. The four-year letterman and two-year starter went on to an eight-year NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals, including a start in Super Bowl XXIII.
The Mendham, N.J., native and 1984 team captain closed his career at Tennessee with 342 tackles and played in the 1985 Senior Bowl while participating in four straight bowl games - Garden State (1981), Peach (1982), Citrus (1983) and Sun (1984). He was a second round draft pick of Cincinnati.
In all, 41 of the 75 teams that have participated in the Sun Bowl over the last 74 years are represented on the squad.
