June 04, 2008 | Baseball
Tennessee center fielder Kentrail Davis added to his already-impressive list of 2008 honors Wednesday when he was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Davis becomes the 34th Volunteer to earn some level of All-America status and the third All-America honoree produced by UT head coach Todd Raleigh.
???Kentrail is one of the most talented freshmen I???ve ever coached,??? Raleigh said. ???But in addition to tremendous talent, he also possesses toughness, tenacity and a work ethic that is second to none. We???re all proud of what he???s accomplished this year and look forward to more great things out of him. He represents everything a Vol should be.???
The Theodore, Ala., native is the 15th Vol to be tabbed as a Freshman All-America selection. Impressively, the Big Orange have produced seven Freshman All-Americas in the last four years.
Prior to Wednesday???s recognition, Davis??? freshman honors haul included being named to the All-SEC second team, earning unanimous selection to the SEC All-Freshman team, twice garnering SEC Freshman of the Week honors and holding the distinction of being the only freshman in the country selected as one of 50 semifinalists for USA Baseball???s prestigious Golden Spikes Award.
A starter in 53 games this season, Davis led Tennessee in nine different offensive statistical categories, and he became just the ninth Vol ever to win the team Triple Crown (leading the team in batting average [.330], home runs [13] and RBI [44]). He also led the team with four multi-homer games and 21 multi-hit games while sharing the team lead with 12 multi-RBI games.
Davis and fellow UT teammate Bryan Morgado???a left-handed pitcher???will take part in USA Baseball???s 2008 National Team Trials later this month.
