Davis Belts 6th Homer for National Trials Team
June 22, 2008 | Baseball
Tennessee outfielder Kentrail Davis continued his hot hitting for the USA Baseball National Trials Team Sunday, blasting a three-run homer over the centerfield wall with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to ignite a late-inning rally that gave the Trials Team a 7-2 victory over the Columbia Blowfish of the Coastal Plain League at Capital City Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
The National Trials Team improved to 8-2 with the victory, its fifth in a row.
Davis, who leads the U.S. squad with six home runs and 19 RBI in 10 games, erased a 2-1 deficit with what proved to be the game-winning hit. The home run came on the first pitch of the at-bat and sailed over the 22-foot wall in straight-away center, easily clearing the 395-foot sign atop the wall. Davis also broke his bat on the home run.
The National Trials Team returns to action Monday at Capital City Stadium with the second of two Blue-White intrasquad games. The final 22-man roster will be announced Tuesday.
Also vying for a spot on the final 2008 National Team roster is Tennessee left-handed pitcher Bryan Morgado. The rising sophomore earned his first win of the trials period Saturday when he allowed three runs on three hits with four walks with seven strikeouts in a predetermined four-inning outing in the team???s first intrasquad game.
Morgado received key run support in that contest from???who else???Davis, whose two-run homer sparked a five-run fifth inning for the victorious Blue Team.
In three appearances spanning seven innings for the Trials Team, Morgado has tallied 10 strikeouts. The Miami, Fla., native logged 104 Ks for the Vols this past spring while garnering Freshman All-America honors.
