Hernandez named Cape Cod Pitcher of the Week

Tennessee baseball pitcher Nick Hernandez recently was named the Cape Cod Baseball League???s Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week after turning in a brilliant performance during the Cotuit Kettleers??? 4-1 opening-day victory over the Brewster Whitecaps last Saturday at Elizabeth Lowell Park.
A rising junior, Hernandez pitched seven dominant innings for Cotuit, scattering seven singles and allowing just one run while striking out eight and issuing no walks to earn his first win of the summer.
The left-hander from Hialeah, Fla., led the Southeastern Conference and ranked fourth nationally this past season with 0.97 walks allowed per nine innings (nine walks in 83 2/3 innings pitched). He also was the only pitcher in the SEC to start at least 10 games and not issue multiple walks in any of those starts.
DAVIS TOP HITTER FOR USA BASEBALL NATIONAL TRIALS TEAM
Tennessee outfielder Kentrail Davis is the USA Baseball National Trials Team???s top hitter through seven games. The rising sophomore from Theodore, Ala., is batting .480 (12-for-25) with seven runs scored, three home runs and 10 RBI.
A Freshman All-America selection this past season, Davis has made four starts in left field, two starts in centerfield???his normal position with the Vols???and one in right field. He has drawn five walks while striking out just once.
Fellow Tennessee teammate and Freshman All-America selection Bryan Morgado, a left-handed pitcher, also is vying for a spot on the National Team. In two relief appearances spanning three innings, Morgado has allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
The 2008 National Team???s final 22-man roster will be announced next Tuesday, June 24.

Tennessee catcher Blake Forsythe continues to lead the Thomasville HiToms of the Coastal Plain League with five home runs and 12 RBI ... The rising sophomore has started 16 of Thomasville???s 17 games and is slugging at a .492 clip ... Fellow rising sophomore P.J. Polk is batting .260 for the La Crosse Loggers of the Northwoods League ... Polk has 15 starts in the outfield and has collected 19 hits, five doubles, one home run and eight RBI for the 13-6 Loggers ... Rising senior Cody Brown is the second-leading hitter on the Woodstock River Bandits of the Valley Baseball League ... In 13 starts, the veteran third baseman and 2008 UT co-captain is batting .347 with 11 runs scored, 17 hits, five doubles and five RBI while sporting a .449 slugging percentage ... Brown has doubled twice in two separate games for the River Bandits ... In five relief appearances for the Waynesboro Generals of the Valley Baseball League, rising senior pitcher Danny Wiltz has a 0.00 ERA with a pair of saves while limiting opposing hitters to a .143 average ... Wiltz has worked 5 2/3 innings with 12 strikeouts and just one walk while allowing only three hits.
