Last week???s MLB highlights from former Tennessee players in professional baseball include first major league starts for two call-ups and a dominating performance by a young Vol. Below are the best performances from former Vols during last week???s action.
?????Luke Hochevar (2003-05) made his second major league start on Sunday after being activated that morning to replace disabled pitcher John Bale in the Kansas City Royals??? rotation. Hochevar pitched three scoreless innings but fell victim to a five-run fourth inning and the Royals went on to loss 7-1 to the Oakland Athletics. He pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up six runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking three.
?????R.A. Dickey (1994-96) made his first MLB start in more than two years on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Dickey was called up after left-hander Erik Bedard was placed on the 15-day disabled list. He got off to a rocky start when the first three batters that he faced reached based and he was touched for three runs that inning. He then settled down and retired 15 of the next 17 batters that he faced. Dickey pitched six innings, giving up five runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking two. The Mariners went on to lose the game 5-4.
?????James Adkins (2005-07) continues to pitch well for the Inland Empire 66ers. On Sunday he pitched six innings, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out 11 in a 6-0 win over the Desert High Mavericks. Adkins has a 1.89 ERA this season and ranks top 5 among pitchers in the California League with 21 strikeouts.
