HOUSTON ??? The Tennessee batting order did little in support of pitcher Bryan Morgado???s double-digit strikeout effort Sunday, as the Volunteers baseball team dropped a 2-0 decision to Oklahoma on the final day of the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
Tennessee redshirt freshman Bryan Morgado tied a Houston College Classic record with 10 strikeouts. The tournament was first played in 2001, and the previous record-holder Rice???s Wade Townsend, who fanned 10 against Texas Tech in 2004.
In eight innings, Morgado surrendered two runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk. In two career starts, Morgado has 22 strikeouts in 16 innings. He took the hard-luck loss to fall to 1-1 on the year as UT totaled just two hits in the game.
Tennessee (4-3) entered Sunday???s contest averaging more than two errors per game, and the Vols wasted little time committing a pair of miscues against the Sooners (5-2). Consecutive infield fielding and throwing errors enabled Oklahoma centerfielder Doug Buser to score the day???s opening run after reaching on a basehit in the top of the second inning.
Sooners catcher J.T. Wise???a junior transfer from LSU???logged an RBI single in the third inning to put OU up 2-0.
Tanner Moore and Cody Grisham entered the game as defensive subs for Tennessee at first base and shortstop, respectively, in the top of the fourth inning.
Tennessee loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth, but Oklahoma starting pitcher Michael Rocha induced a pop-up and two strikeouts on UT???s next three batters to keep the Vols offense off the board. Rocha logged his first win of the season while allowing no runs on just two hits with 7 Ks through eight innings. Jake McCarter threw a perfect final inning for the Sooners to log his second save of the season.
Junior Aaron Everett struck out a pair of OU batters while working a perfect ninth inning for the Vols.
A light drizzle in the middle innings gradually grew heavier and the stadium???s retractable roof was closed in the sixth inning.
UT now trails the all-time series with Oklahoma 0-2, dating to 1951.
And in two all-time appearances at the Houston College Classic, the Vols own a 2-4 record. Tennessee went 1-2 in the 2005 to go along with a 1-2 record this year.
The Vols host James Madison Wednesday at 3 p.m. before welcoming Eastern Michigan for a three-game weekend series.
