Bertani says that provided Gaines meets all other progress-toward-degree requirements, he will be eligible to compete next academic year (2008).
A Covington native, Gaines was playing as a fifth-year senior before suffering a season-ending knee injury in the second game of 2007 against Southern Mississippi. He also missed his freshman season of 2003 with an injury.
