Tennessee men's tennis player Kaden Hensel was named an All-America by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association this past weekend. Hensel becomes the 26th Vol to be honored as an All-America.
"This award is great for Kaden and he deserves it for all of his efforts," head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "We're so happy for Kaden, he had a fantastic year and is developing into one of the all-time Tennessee greats."
Hensel finished his junior campaign with a singles record of 28-12 and had 15 victories over ranked opponents. The Australia native went 12-5 at the No. 1 spot in the dual-match lineup and ended the season ranked 18th in singles. Hensel teamed up with Bobby Cameron to form UT's No. 1 doubles duo. The UT tandem finished the season with a 23-12 record and had 10 wins over ranked opponents.
"Gaining All-America status was my biggest individual goal when I came here," Hensel said. "Achieving the status before my senior season is an honor."
The UT standout will don the colors of his native country, Australia, in the World University Games, played in Bangkok, Thailand, this August. Hensel plans to return to Tennessee next season and lead a UT squad that is returning its three best singles players.
"We have pictures of our All-Americas lining the hallway by our offices and it's great to add Kaden to that distinguished list," Winterbotham said.
To be named an All-America one had to either be one of the top 16 seeds in the NCAA Singles Championships, reach the round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Championships, or finish in the top 20 of the final Fila Rankings.
